Box of Hats and Wigs |
Hello. I'm Jonathan Cresswell. I used to blog here daily, but that fell through and now I store bits and pieces on here. I'm a journalist/web designer/madman. Read my actual blog or find out more about me on my website. I also tweet. |
So I’ve accidentally become a web designer again - and the first of my three current website projects has gone live.
I’ve touched up the website for the student paper at the University, The Linc, where I’m the Assistant Deputy Editor - which is pretty much a madeup title meaning “he does some stuff and is a bit important but not the most”.
You can see the new site at http://thelinc.co.uk/ - and if you’ve seen it before it might look quite familiar, but at the same time you should be able to notice the new additions.
First, there’s the new navigation - it’s moved up the top so you don’t have to scroll, it looks cleaner, and there’s extended navigation when you’re in a category.
Second, the homepage has been completely rebuilt - it’s still like a newspaper, but now it’s easier to tell what’s newest and there’s more pictures - both to make it look nicer and to highlight new content.
And the third major change is in the post pages. When you look at an article, it now brings in related posts. It took a work to tune the settings to get the right sort of things show up, but we’ve got an amazing archive of over 800 posts tracking the last two years of the Lincoln and the university here. It’d be a shame to hide it. And alongside it, tag navigation has been made public.
There’s a few minor things like how the podcasts are displayed, but those are just little tweaks that I hope work for the best.
It’s not a revolutionary new design, but it’s a nice upgrade to something that works and hopefully will be the starting point for a great year for the new editorial team - and I look forward to what projects come up next (after amazing work covering the general election). We’ll be working hard and innovating to continue our reputation as the premier student publication on campus - and on a national level too.
