Hello. I'm Jonathan Cresswell. I used to blog here daily, but that fell through and now I store bits and pieces on here. I'm a journalist/web designer/madman. Read my actual blog or find out more about me on my website. I also tweet. |
TIGA released some interesting stats on the development industry in the UK - comparisons between independent studios and such. Most sites ran this as a story with the statistics from the press release, but I wanted to try something a little bit different.
I do like numbers and maths, but it’s also fun to explore them in a different way - so I built a mini interactive visualisation thing. It’s a bit more engaging than your average graph, as you can click the options to see different categories, get the sense of scale with the clean look (but with full data in a little sidebar), and also drag and drop the elements around to how it suits you.
It’s not overly impressive and it’s not a “wow!” mashup from the data - though I might play with it further - particularly comparing the gender ratio of developers with players.
It’s been a while since I did anything in Flash - in fact, the last time I used it was before Actionscript 3, making me less than rusty. Thankfully it’s not a difficult language at the level I’m using it, and so the resizing of objects, moving of them and the text fields happened quite easily.
Anyhoo, it’s a little fun thing and hopefully I’ll do more increasingly interesting data stuff over the year.
Maybe I’ll try and add nice tweens to the resizing so they animate next.
Any thoughts?
